Your bedroom is a set of physiological signals. Here's how to tune each one, ranked by evidence and cost.

Why it matters
Sleep advice usually targets behavior — schedules, caffeine, screens. All correct. But the room itself sends physiological signals all night, and unlike willpower, a room only has to be fixed once.
Light
The evidence here is strong and keeps getting stronger. Light at night — even moderate room light — suppresses melatonin, raises nighttime heart rate, and fragments sleep in laboratory studies, and larger cohort work associates bedroom light exposure with worse metabolic outcomes.
Do: blackout curtains or a contoured sleep mask; dim, warm lighting in the last hour; move or cover LED indicators. Skip: expensive “circadian lighting systems” until the basics are done.
Sound

Intermittent noise (traffic spikes, doors, snoring) disturbs sleep more than steady sound at the same average level — which is why steady broadband masking can genuinely help in noisy settings.
Temperature
Core body temperature must fall for consolidated sleep. Most adults do best in a noticeably cool room — commonly cited as 16–19 °C (60–67 °F) — with warm extremities (socks are legitimate sleep science). A warm bath or shower 1–2 hours before bed supports the same temperature drop.
Air
The quietest of the four signals, but measurable: bedroom CO₂ and ventilation studies associate stuffy rooms with worse subjective sleep quality and next-day performance. Crack a door or window where noise and climate allow; treat air purifiers as an allergy tool first, a sleep tool second.
