Evidence relationship

For the category / mechanism

Evidence: Established — MERV ratings are a standardized ASHRAE test; MERV-13 media capturing a large share of smoke-sized fine particles is measured filtration physics, not a marketing claim.

Editorial assessment

Strengths

  • MERV-13 captures a substantial fraction of PM2.5 — the particle size that makes wildfire smoke a health problem.
  • Dual use: four build a CR box, and one upgrades your furnace/HVAC return for whole-home filtration.
  • 2-inch depth holds more media than 1-inch: better airflow and longer life in a CR box.

Limitations

  • Genuine MERV-13 only — 'MERV-13 equivalent' or unrated 'allergen' filters may capture far less.
  • Filters load up: during heavy smoke, a CR box's filters may need replacing after weeks, not months.
  • In HVAC use, older systems may struggle with MERV-13 pressure drop — check your system's rating.

Our assessment

The filter is where the actual air cleaning happens — the fan just moves air through it. MERV-13 is the sweet spot for smoke: meaningfully better fine-particle capture than MERV-8/11, without the pressure drop of true HEPA that a box fan can’t overcome.

Four of these plus a box fan make a CR box. One of these in your HVAC return, with the fan set to “on” (recirculate), quietly filters the whole house — the most underrated move in our smoke-indoors guide.
